Geocache Description:

A scenic drive with interesting geology along the canyon walls. High clearance is necessary, 2wd truck or SUV will be able to do it easily. Several good swimming holes along the way.
We have tried to find some history on the Crackerjack Mine, but without any success. The mine is about six and a half miles back in the hills along the East Verde River canyon off of Hwy 87. There are two adits and a concrete pad as well as some corrogated metal lying around. The mine can be approached from three different directions, but the best is the Ash Creek entrance to FR209 located at milepost 256 on Hwy 87 just out of Payson. The road is currently in great condition and is an easy drive due to the drought. When it rains, the several crossings of Ash Creek can be big mud holes and the concrete crossing of the East Verde can have water flowing over it. At present the water in the Verde is barely flowing and Ash Creek is dry. A good time to go. The terrain rating may seem a little high now, but it will seem a little low after some rain. The other two approaches (FR209 from north, FR406 from south) require high clearance and four wheel drive.
The entrance to the mine was destroyed since the cache was placed. No more spelunking possibilites.
