Sea glass and beach glass are similar, but come from two different types of water. "Sea glass" is physically weathered glass found on beaches along bodies of salt water. These weathering processes produce natural frosted glass.[1] "Genuine sea glass" can be collected as a hobby and is used for decoration, most commonly in jewelry. "Beach glass" comes from fresh water and in most cases has a less frosted appearance than sea glass. Sea glass takes 20 to 40 years, and sometimes as much as 100 years, to acquire its characteristic texture and shape. It is also referred to as "Drift glass". Sea glass begins as normal shards of broken glass that are then tumbled and ground until the sharp edges are smoothed and rounded. In this process, the glass gains a frosted appearance over many years. Naturally produced sea glass originates as pieces of glass from broken bottles, broken tableware, or even shipwrecks, which are rolled and tumbled in the ocean for years until all of their edges are rounded off, and the glass has been worn to a frosted appearance. The most common colors of sea glass are kelly green, brown, white, and clear. These colors mainly come from glass bottles, mostly used by companies that sell beer, juices, soft drinks, and other beverages. The clear or white glass comes from clear plates and glasses, windshields, windows, and assorted other sources. Using the above information, and your own observations, please email me the answers to the following questions: 1. Gather a few different colored pieces of seaglass and examine the wear pattern, are they roughly the same size or different? 2. Estimate the length and width of the beach, how many years do you think the glass has been here? 3. How many different types and colours of glass are there on this beach? 4. Take a picture of the beach/glass and post it with your log, everyone loves seaglass! :) PLEASE DO NOT REMOVE ANY GLASS FROM THIS BEACH!
