Geocache Description:

Rock Garden

In geology, a boulder is a rock fragment with size greater than 25.6 centimetres (10.1 in) in diameter. In places like North America, glacial erratics are common. Glacial Erratics are boulders picked up by ice sheets during their advance, and deposited when they melt. They are called "erratic" because they typically are of a different rock type than the bedrock on which they are deposited. One of them is used as the pedestal of the Bronze Horseman in Saint Petersburg, Russia.

In geology, cross-bedding is layering within a stratum and at an angle to the main bedding plane. The sedimentary structures which result are roughly horizontal units composed of inclined layers. The original depositional layering is tilted, such tilting not being the result of post-depositional deformation. Cross-beds or "sets" are the groups of inclined layers. Cross-bedding forms during deposition on the inclined surfaces of bedforms such as ripples and dunes; it indicates that the depositional environment contained a flowing medium (typically water or wind). Especially common are conglomerates, coarse-grained sedimentary rocks containing finer grained sediments.

How to Qualify

Question 1: Describe the boulders at the Rock Garden.

Question 2: What sort of rocks likely compose the formation?

Question 3: What evidence of cross-bedding can be found on cliff faces near the Rock Garden? How do you know this?

Question 4 (Optional): Take a picture of yourself at the Rock Garden with (you guessed it) some rocks!

Feel free to email me the answers or send them through GC Messenging.
