Little Angels - Ernest Cawood
This is part of a series of geocaches that have been placed to remember the young lives that were lost to tragic circumstances and lost in history. Keeping their memories alive.
Ernest and his brother Albert were out one day getting firewood. And usually when the boys were doing this chore they would take their guns for shooting rabbits and hawks. Ernest had spotted a hawk and grabbed his gun, but the bird flew away before he could take a shot. He then threw his gun on the pile of wood that he was stacking, and went back to carting and stacking wood, not giving it a second thought that the gun was still cocked and ready to fire.
All of a sudden a piece of wood bumped the gun, and it went off, hitting Ernest in the side of his stomach. He was only standing 18 inches away from the gun. His brother helped him back to the house, and called for help. For four long hours Ernest suffered in incredible pain, until he eventually passed away.
He was buried in the Apollo Bay cemetery two days later. He was 13 years old.
A number of years later Ernest’s brother Albert enlisted in World War 1...he was killed in action.
