Geocache Description:

I love to quilt! And sometimes Mr QuiltinAnnie helps with the design; figuring out the angles and measurements! This letterbox series will highlight a traditional quilt block or pattern beginning with the letter of the stamp found inside the cache. You will need to supply your own stamp pad.

Amish Diamond in the Square

The Diamond in the Square is one of the earliest patterns devised by Amish women in Lancaster County in Pennsylvania, somewhere in the late 1800's. In their quilts, Amish women always used conservative styles compared to what was popular in quilting at any given time. Amish quilts were made of wool or cotton, as popular silks were considered too worldly. Quilt patterns were plain, with only solid colours being used. The pieces might be sewn together by treadle machine, but the actual quilting of the layers together was always done by hand. And this is where the women were allowed to let their creativity shine! If you look very closely at the above photo, you should notice the intricate stitching detail. Piecing the quilt was done at home, but when the top was ready to be quilted it was often an occasion for women to gather around the quilting frame, visiting as they hand quilted the quilt together.
