Geocache Description:

The Santa Maria Valley Railroad was built in 1911 to service the oil refineries southeast of the Santa Maria Valley. The railroad ran all the way south to its terminus at an oil and asphalt refinery known as Roadamite.

In 1925 Captain G. Allan Hancock bought the railroad at auction and expanded operations to include the delivery of refrigerated fresh produce nationwide via the Southern Pacific Railroad’s mainline in Guadalupe. The Santa Maria Valley Railroad continues in business to this day, still hauling freight for customers in the Santa Maria Valley.

The Rosemary Farm/Roadamite spur of the SMVR standard gauge rail line ran directly east and west of this geocache’s GZ. This spur’s tracks were removed in 2002 and today the abandoned right of way serves us all as a much appreciated exercise trail.

Please note: parking can be tricky here. Best street parking is immediately west of GZ on the south side of East Jones Street. Alternative parking may be found just north on South Bradley Rd. but you must approach from the north as Bradley is a southbound one-way street between Main St. and Jones.

Bring a pen to sign this log-only cache. As always, please utilize your geo-stealth skills as this is a very busy area! Most of all…Have Fun!
