The point of this small cache is to bring you to the feet of "The Cosmic Christ". Dedicated in January of 1974, this 47' high by 154' wide mosaic in 7 panels, was originally made up of 1.4 million 3/4" square glass tiles in approximately 60 different colors. However, due to some flaws in the original structural design of the mosaic, many of the tiles have fallen off over the years. A 5-year replacement project that was started in 2016 will update the troubled Huntsville icon and result in a new "high-def" representation. The new mosaic will be made up of 4.3 million pieces of reflective blown glass tiles in over 1,000 shades of color! The new mosaic is being hand-fabricated and installed by the Barsanti Marble Bronze Mosaic Company in Italy one panel at a time.
The First-to-Find prize is a piece of jewelry made from the broken pieces of the original tiles. I think there is a beautiful analogy here - no matter how flawed and broken we may find ourselves, the God of Creation, the "Cosmic Christ" can put us back together in a "new and improved" "high-def" version that is truly beautiful and useful in the Master's hands.
