Geocache Description:

In 1884, the most destructive earthquake known in Britain in the last 400 years happened at 9.18 am, on April 22nd. The epicentre was just at 580m away from this cache location at 51.82°N, 0.90°E.

The Colchester earthquake as it is known, because Colchester and its surrounding villages suffered the most destruction, is estimated to have been somewhere between 4.6 and 5.2 on the Richter scale. The earthquake caused considerable damage to 1,250 buildings in the area (every house in Abberton village was said to have been damaged). The medieval church in Langenhoe was significantly damaged and was demolished in 1962.

Located along a public footpath, this area of woodland was planted during the 90s. The path can be followed between Peldon Road and Mersea Road to join up with other caches in the area and is a lovely tree-lined walk.

The cache should be replaced exactly as found. Please be aware the tree cover may affect your GPS.
