Alpha mine was primarily a hydraulic placer mine in the Washington mining district. Mining of the Alpha deposits commenced in the mid-1850s. The mine was worked extensively until the mid-1880s when the Sawyer Decision put an end to large-scale hydraulic mining in the Sierra Nevada. The Alpha Diggings produced over $2 million (period values). The small town of Alpha was the birthplace of famed opera singer Emma Nevada. If you keep following Alpha Road you will end up in the little town of Washington.
The site of the mine is now covered in tailings, small ponds, and scattered claims. Also lots of nice chunks of white quartz.
The cache is a short walk off Alpha road. The road is rough, but if careful, most vehicles should be able to make it when dry. Wet weather might require 4WD. Please, replace camo as found.
