Geocache Description:

This regular-size cache is the last of six superhero caches placed in Rolfs Park for the 2019 West Bend Cache Ba$h. Total distance is a quarter mile in each direction from the starting coordinates to the final. THE CACHE IS NOT LOCATED AT THE POSTED COORDINATES. See below for directions to the cache. A trail map is also shown below, although it is now a bit outdated.

This is a letterbox hybrid cache. Letterboxing is another outdoor activity in which people follow clues or a story (rather than just coordinates) to find a container and then put their personal stamp in the logbook and then stamp their own journal with the stamp from the cache.

A letterbox hybrid, like this one, is both a geocache and a letterbox. It can include both coordinates and clues to get you to the final location. Follow the instructions in the following paragraphs to be directed to the actual cache location. Contents include a stamp (do not take) for letterboxing, as well as a log book and swag for geocachers and letterboxers.

YOUR ADVENTURE AWAITS

Parking is available in the lot at N 43° 24.325 W 088° 12.120. This is where it all begins!

The trailhead for entrance into the nature preserve is just past the end of the parking lot at N 43° 24.332 W 088° 12.157, heading north, just outside of the nearby dog park. Depending on your route you may encounter several other caches along the way besides Thor, including Yahtzee, the Incredibles, Elastigirl, Captain America, Green Lantern, and Batman.

1. The starting coordinates for this letterbox hybrid adventure are N43 24.395 W88 12.302, as shown on the map. One suggested way to get to the starting coordinates is to go to the 4-way intersection (“A”), followed by the path at the treeline going west into the woods (”B”). We’ve labeled the map with “A” & “B” if you choose to go that way.

There isn’t a cache or waypoint marker to find at the coordinates, it’s just the starting reference point as you walk the trails. From this point onward you probably don’t need to enter any coordinates, but they’re presented for those who would like confirmation of the route.

2. You’re at a fork on the trail. The fork goes NW and SW. Take the southwest fork about 353 feet until you reach a Rolfs Nature Preserve sign at N43 24.367 W88 12.372.

3. From the sign take the trail going north about 82 feet to the bench at N43 24.380 W88 12.368. You’re almost there – only 72 feet away from the cache!

4. From the bench, go about 59 feet north on the trail and stop. Look east (right) and head a short distance in that direction. You’ll find the cache at the convergence of a group of nine tree trunks, about a foot above ground. You’re there!

5. OK the tricky part. How to get back to the parking lot without a bunch of bushwhacking. If you head back to the trail and go north, in about 60 feet you’ll come to a metal post. Ignore that and go about another 60 feet past the metal post; you’ll come to a wood post at N43 24.421 W88 12.370 with a nice wide path on the right that’s relatively easy to walk. Turn right (east) on to that path and head toward the parking lot. We colored it yellow on the trail map shown online on the geocache page. Actually it’s not so tricky!

THOR

Thor, the god of thunder, is a superhero from the otherworldly realm of Asgard. Cast out of Asgard because of his arrogance, he lives amongst humans in Midgard (Earth), where he has become one of their finest defenders. Thor possesses superhuman strength, speed, agility, durability, and like the other gods of Asgard he can live for thousands of years. He is a founding member of the superhero group The Avengers, along with Ironman, Hulk, Ant-Man, and the Wasp, with Captain America joining shortly afterward.

Thor's greatest weapon, and closest ally, is Mjolnir, an enchanted hammer forged in the heart of a dying star, which has power over storms and can generate powerful energy blasts. Only he can wield it. Thor uses this hammer to summon rain, wind, lightning, and thunder. When spun, the mallet can allow Thor to fly, hover, and even open portals to other dimensions and realms. When thrown, it acts as a sort of boomerang, destroying all things in its path before returning to its owner.

Perhaps the most powerful member of the Avengers, he commands the mystical hammer Mjolnir to protect Asgard and Earth. He is the son of Odin. He is the prince of Asgard. He is the god of thunder. He is Thor.
