Geocache Description:

One day while my sister and I were taking her horse out for a ride up an old road in Hyde Park, the horse started acting up, crow-hopping and tossing her head and skittering around. We couldn't see anything around to scare her -- no snakes or dogs or people or anything, except rocks, grass, trees and shrubs. It was a just a dirt road! When she acted up again on another day at the same spot, we decided she could only be scared of a nearby rose bush! Well, you know they are quite large and do have all those fierce yellow flowers, long trapping tendrils and razor-sharp thorns! After that, whenever my sister and I saw one of these glorious yellow rose bushes in bloom, we would grin at each other and chorus, "it's a scary rose bush!”

I had planned to place this cache in nearby Newton, which has a LOT of these scary rose bushes, some of which are quite large. (Check out those near the Plum Crazy greenhouses, for a start!) However, on the way there to place the physical cache, I passed this spot and changed my mind. The island of roses here is truly fearful! Come in early-to-mid-June to see the bushes dense with blossoms, the air rich with their sweet scent.

The hide area is in a triangle of vacant land formed by the main highway and two gravel roads. Beware of thistles and scratchweed, and possibly feral cats, judging by a small pile of empty tins nearby.

Congratulations to Oreoshakers and all the little Oreoshakers, who went just a "little" ways out of their way home from Smithfield and got to see this amazing rose bush in full bloom for the FTF!

This cache is part of the series, MountainHobbit's Mathoms, Year 13. Don't know what a mathom is? Check out Chapter 1 in The Fellowship of the Ring by J. R. R. Tolkien to find out the reason for this hobbity celebration!
