Food Forest gardening is a low-maintenance sustainable plant-based food production and agroforestry system based on woodland ecosystems, incorporating fruit and nut trees, shrubs, herbs, vines and perennial vegetables which have yields directly useful to humans. Making use of companion planting, these can be intermixed to grow in a succession of layers, to build a woodland habitat.
Forest gardening is a prehistoric method of securing food in tropical areas. In the 1980s, Robert Hart coined the term "forest gardening" after adapting the principles and applying them to temperate climates.
Food Forests have layers:
(1) canopy layer followed by (2) understory trees, (3) bushes and shrubs, and down to (4) herbaceous layers. Under the ground, there are (5) root yields, and at the surface, there are (6) groundcovers. There are also vertical layers of (7) climbers.

Food Forest South Tel Aviv is a community project, established at 2015 by local residents from the 5 neighbourhoods surrounding the Park Hahorshot - Shapira, Kiryat Shalom, Neve Ofer, Florentin, Jaffa. This is the first urban Food Forest in Israel, being part of Tel-Aviv's agenda to regenerate the urban nature in the city.
The community members of the food forest are the planners, community leaders, planters and executers of the project, with funds and close collaboration of relevant stakeholders from Tel Aviv-Jaffa muinicipality.
