Geocache Description:

Eye Spy With My Robot Eye, Part 1 of 4

The Kanata Autobot Academy is a private school for gifted Transformers. It teaches young Autobots a wide range of skills that will eventually lead to prestigious careers in the Autobot ranks - such as an infantry soldier, or part of the Marine Defence Force, or becoming an Autobot Scout, etc.

The teachers are designing a new exam that the students must pass if they are to graduate as an Autobot Scout. The most important skill an Autobot Scout needs is the skill of observation. This new exam will consist of four parts or challenges, with each challenge being harder than the previous one.

In part 1 of their exam the youngsters must learn that sometimes an Autobot may need to leverage technology to aid in their Autobot Scout observation skills. In particular, Google Street View, and other sites on the internet, provide a way to 'virtually drive' to places without physically being there.

In addition to the challenge portion, Part 1 of the exam also includes a little Autobot history lesson. Part 1 can be seen below:

25 years ago, 2 Autobots from the Calabogie Defense Force (often called the "Calabogie Truckers") picked up an incoming transmission from their satellite dish that they were guarding. The message was from the evil Decepticons. After decoding the message they learned: the Decepticons would be coming to Earth to join in the battle against the humans and Autobots, they would be landing in Calabogie to take over a radio station in the area, and once the Autobot forces are eliminated, the Decepticons will travel to destroy the Autobot Ashton Defense Force. The Calabogie Truckers fought valiantly, but unfortunately the Decepticons were the victors. One of the Autobots fled to a hideout that was close to a satellite dish and a radio tower. He was able to send out a broadcast that was intended to be picked up by the Ashton Defense Force. He let them know that they were both injured in the battle, and that he saw his other Autobot trucker friend crawl away only to collapse beside a small tree. He said that he hid his own Energon cube in a nearby forest, whereas he thinks the other Autobot didn't have time to hide his Energon cylinder that he kept near his [human mandatory] licence plate. Unfortunately this is the last anyone has heard of the Calabogie Truckers since the incident 25 years ago; perhaps one day someone will discover their remains.

The story doesn't end there however. Since the Autobot was able to get the broadcast out in time, the Ashton Defense Force was ready for the Decepticons, and managed to ambush them on their approach. It was a brutal fight. Having defeated the Decepticons, the 2 Autobots of Ashton were considered heroes. They served for many years as Autobot combatants before they eventually retired. After retirement, they lived a more peaceful life helping their human companions. They did this for many years, and even after they passed away, they still continue to be of benefit to their human friends.

The challenge is to find one of the Autobots from Ashton, and then find the hidden Energon cylinder. You can find the Ashton Autobot somewhere south-west of N 45° 10.140 W 076° 03.657 along Cavanagh road (but not at the posted location). Because Autobot Scouts are encouraged to geocache (as it builds their observation skills), the following hint is provided: "Eye Spy with my robot eye" may remind people of a different series of geocaches. Take the digital root of the name of the author of those caches (The name starts with an "S" and has 11 'characters' [someone just as cool has 12 characters in it though, but not him for this clue]). If the digital root is even, then the Autobot will be on the north side of Cavanagh road, otherwise if it is odd, then he will be on the south side. If this hint cannot be figured out, then the Autobot Scouts will be forced to look on both sides of the road. Once the Autobot is found, you will notice he is helping friendly humans with the following telephone number: 613-257-ABCD (Note: ABCD is NOT 2918, if you came up with that then you read the instructions wrong and headed the wrong way on the road). Once the values for A, B, C and D are known, you can find the Energon cylinder here:
N 45° 09.7(C)(A)' W 76° 04.3(B)(D-1)'

The other parts of the Autobot Scout exam are:

Be sure to private message me if you know of any other undiscovered Autobot burial grounds (old cars/trucks/motorcycles/skidoos or random scraps of metal) in, or near, Ottawa ;) - and don't forget to 'favorite' these if you are enjoying the series (this also increases the visibility of this series, and will draw in more cachers).
