Geocache Description:

The Predecessor

In 2012, the Caboose Cache (GC43FDW) was created with the cooperation of the Ashland Museum. This cache proved popular, with more than 400 finds and 22 Favorite Points.

However, the museum staff desired to move the cache location from right at the caboose to another spot nearby. In fact, they did move it to a nearby location (this one.) However, the original cache page was not updated to the new location, so searchers kept going to the original location. The original cache has been archived and, at the museum staff's request, this cache is being published. This cache continues to highlight the caboose while providing a safer caching experience. Previous finders are welcome to make a return visit (the container and logbook will be familiar.)

Congratulations to NPGlenn on the FTF!

The Railroad and Ashland

Ashland traces its history back to the arrival of the Richmond, Fredericksburg and Potomac Railroad in the 1840's. The town was incorporated in 1858 and work started to strengthen the railroad connections with Richmond. Although activity during the war destroyed the young rail network, the system was rebuilt and Ashland became a bedroom community for many Richmond workers. Multiple passenger trains ran daily for many years to transport the workers between their homes and work. You can learn much more about the railroad impact on Ashland with a visit to the museum.

The Caboose

The caboose was active with the Chesapeake & Ohio Railroad from 1926 until it was retired in 1974. Somehow it found its way to a field in nearby Fluvanna County. It was rescued from there and restored in 1997, when it was brought to Ashland.

Permission

The Ashland Museum, which was founded in 2009 to capture the history of the town, has granted permission for this cache to be placed. While their open hours are limited, they welcome your search.
