This cache is located in a tree island containing several Whitebark Pines. In 2012 Whitebark Pine (pinus albicaulis) was legally listed in Canada as "endangered". A study by the U.S. Forest Service resulted in this tree being ranked as the most vulnerable to climate change impacts. When this area was being surveyed for the location of the Peak to Peak Gondola terminal building, special consideration was given due to the presence of these trees.
Whitebark Pine is considered to be a keystone or foundation species in subalpine ecosystems. It has a special relationship with the Clark's nutcracker. You might see some of these birds in this area. They look quite similar to a Whiskeyjack or Grey Jay, but are larger. The bird uses its slender, long, curved beak to break open the cones and remove the seeds. The nutcracker then buries the seeds for winter meals. If the nutcracker forgets where it buries the seeds they are in an ideal environment for germination and sprouting.
In 2011 forestry researchers from the University of British Columbia used the clear-cut lift line of the Peak to Peak, planting saplings in order to study how this endangered species will fare in the face of climate change.
As for why this cache belongs in the "RELICS" series, the hide makes use of the only remaining evidence of the former location of the Catskinner Chair's original top terminal. It was relocated downhill in 2007 to make room for the Peak to Peak gondola. In 2018 the entire Catskinner fixed grip triple chair was removed and replaced with the high speed quad Catskinner Express.
