SEMAG Meet & Greet #53 - Mystery at the Museum

Where: Washburn Park, Marion, MA

Date: Saturday, July 27th

Time: 10 A.M. - 1 P.M.

Additional Info: The below information is taken from the official geocaching page about Mystery at the Museum:

The heist at the Teague-Ulmer Museum remains the biggest jewel theft in history and one of the great unsolved mysteries of the museum world. Many theories have surfaced as to where the stolen jewels have been hidden, but after many years investigators have still not retrieved them. New evidence has recently revealed itself and the authorities need your help to find the stolen jewels.

From July 11 to August 11, collect clues to track down the missing jewels. Once you have found all of the jewels, uncover the combination changed by the thieves to return them safely to the vault!

Welcome to the SEMAG version of Mystery at the Museum. A travesty has occurred at our geo-museum and someone has acquired the FTF prize in an unscrupulous way - by taking out all the other cachers by using their TOTTs!  Your task is to determine which one of these cachers is the culprit, what TOTT they used and what room location they were in when they committed the unthinkable crime.

So who are the suspects?

AnubisRW + SkyTurtle: : Don't let their innocent look fool you! They look like the all -American family and they will tell you all about their latest caching adventure. But watch out for the little fox - she's a sneaky one and she knows how to distract you from your mission by just flashing that cute smile...and 2 seconds later they've snatched that FTF from right under your nose!

~Bailey~ : Such a loving couple on the ~outside~ - conniving on the ~inside~! They escaped getting caught in the RI FTF scandal, but we're still keeping an eye on them. His grumpiness distracts you into oblivion while she quietly makes a dash for the FTF. ~Mission accomplished~.

Groopsoop : Such a funny guy but don't let that friendly face lull you into thinking he's your caching buddy. He'll tell you amusing caching stories while secretly plotting his strategy. The FTF hunt fuels his geo-fire and he'll stop at nothing to get that prize!

Hipointer and Capiti : What a pair! The gentleman will make you think that an FTF doesn't interest him at all. He'll share stories of their amazing worldly travels. While you are having this friendly conversation with him about their geo-adventures, his sly accomplish will sneak right in and snatch that FTF from under your nose!

jlchips: : Innocent looking young man who pulls you right in; fierce competitor when there's an FTF on the line. He's a gambler - he'll gamble on you getting distracted by his Dad's stories about their latest caching adventure while he quietly sneaks away to snag that FTF. Watch out - anything goes with this cacher!

MsGwozdz : Ah, the fallen princess! She knows everyone and everything! Don't let her friendly chatter fool you. She knows all your likes, dislikes and your weaknesses! She'll use them to her advantage to distract you and grab that FTF before you even know what happened!

So what are the TOTTs?

  • Ammo Can

  • Cell Phone

  • Flashlight

  • Hiking Stick

  • Magnet

  • Zip tie

And, finally, the museum room locations?

  • Arboretum

  • Art Exhibit Room

  • Basement

  • Cafeteria

  • Courtyard

  • Main Hall

So HOW do I determine the who, what and where?

You must first find the 5 different Mystery at the Museum (MatM) caches and locate the cards inside the caches.

From each of these caches, you should “collect” (please do NOT remove the actual cards from the caches. If the cards are missing, there should be a QR code in the lid of the container that you can scan to obtain the cards):

A Suspect card

A TOTT card

A Room Location card

When you discover a card, you are to eliminate that option on your Detective Notepad which is included in the Image Gallery. After scanning all five MatM codes, you will have only one Suspect, one TOTT, and one Location NOT checked off of your list. Only then will you know: WHO stole the FTF? With WHAT TOTT? And, WHERE did it happen?

So WHAT do I need to participate in this Mystery at the Museum?

You will need your GPS.

You will also need a writing utensil to complete your notepad.

You will need a good friend to distract everyone else while you make a run for the FTF.

You will need a QR code reader in order to decipher the secret code to find out who the accomplice is (see below).

Piece together the three parts to determine the final coordinates below:

N 41° ___ ___ . ___ ___ ___ W 071° ___ ___ . ___ ___ ___

BUT WAIT! We just found out that the culprit had an accomplice!  Your new task is to find the other culprit. You must first find and scan the different Mystery at the Museum (MatM) codes located on your fellow event attendees!!   It won't be hard - each of your fellow attendees should have received a secret code along with a Detective's Notepad.  Simply check in with each person and ask (nicely) to scan their code.  You will be shown a cacher, room location or a TOTT.  You can then eliminate those items from your notepad.  There are 22 codes in total but you probably won't need to scan all of them to decipher the who/what/where.  When you think you've determined the correct culprit along with their choice of TOTT and the location, let the hosts know!  Maybe there will be a prize!
