Located on the approach to the original site of the first operational military airbase in the UK. Opened in 1913 it was established by No.2 Squadron of the Royal Flying Corps and until closed as an airbase in the 1950's it was primarily a training base, readying pilots for duty.
The Royal Flying Corps (RFC) was the original air complement of the British Army until it merged with the Royal Naval Air Service in 1918 to become the Royal Air Force.
