Green Bay Police K-9 Officer Pyro, a 2½-year-old Belgian Malinois, was stabbed three times in the neck after the dog was released in an attempt to arrest a man who threatened to kill a family member on April 7, 2019. After a week in the hospital, multiple surgeries and subsequent complications Pyro returned home with his handler Green Bay police officer Scott Salzmann.
Police and dog trainers say handlers try to minimize the risk of injury to the dogs, but their work is by nature dangerous.
“It is a dangerous job and K-9 handlers are usually in the top percentage of injuries and death” because they are the ones searching for the suspects, said Evan Anderson, Southwest regional director for the National Police Dog Foundation.
