Rock of the Small Cwm
‘Head of the elephant’, this cache is first (or last) in a series of four encompassing the main summits surrounding Cwm Planwydd (Cwm: bowl shaped valley, Planwydd: young planted trees), the name may stem from the plantation woodlands of the area both east and west of the cwm.
The summit is a secondary summit of Mynydd Mawr (Big Mountain) known locally as Yr Eliffant (no prizes for guessing the English) because of its apparent resemblance to the animal. This cache is located on the top of the elephant’s head, AKA Craig Cwmbychan (Small-Cwm Rock).
This cache can be reached from a few angles, the easiest being from the summit of Mynydd Mawr. Another option (the one I used to hide the cache) is to scramble up from the shore of Llyn Cwellyn following Afon Goch up-stream (keep the stream and all tributaries to your left). The track is steep and not very well defined, but it makes an excellent climb if you think you’re up for it. Use and OS map to plan your route (the governments Magic Map Application is good for online mapping).
If you don’t know the few places you can park for free around here, the best car park I would recommend is the Gorsaf Rhyd Ddu Station car park, being at the foot of Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) a day’s parking is £6, however it offers a good start for this mountain too.
You’re looking for a small tupperware box, it is not within the cairn so please do not search around the structure.
Pob Lwc!
