Geocache Description:

Places of geocaching: they are places famous once, but now, despite being just a few steps away from the busy roads we travel, they are unknown to most. This, in my opinion, is one of the most evocative places in Gallura.

PATH

To get to the Castle, located at the top of Mount San Leonardo, leave the car at the free parking, you will have to climb a steep stairway of about 429 uphill and 20 downhill steps: so in total 450 steps to overcome a difference in altitude of about 100 meters . !!!
Access to the castle is free and it is possible to visit it all year round but during the summer it is advisable to climb in the early hours of the morning or in the late afternoon to avoid arriving excessively overheated and fatigued. Also bring a supply of drinking water.

BALAIANA CASTLE

From the remains of the Castle, composed of square blocks of interlocking granite without any type of binder, it goes back to its construction dating to the 11th century. It was probably the seat of the most ancient judges of Gallura and remained operative until 1442 when it was almost completely razed to the ground by the Aragonesi. What you see now is the result of a recent restoration.

CHURCH OF SAN LEONARDO

Through a short path you reach the Church of San Leonardo, considered a rare example of Romanesque architecture in Gallura. It was probably the castle chapel.

To get to the top you will have to work hard but the view you will enjoy once you arrive will repay you for every effort !!

Remember to bring a pen (don’t leave it into the car !!!) and have fun !!!
