Before the dam was constructed a small town called Isabella (now Old Isabella) stood where the North Fork and South Forks of the Kern River met (at this approximate virtual coordinate). The town was originally called Barton Junction after a homesteader named Steven Barton. He had chosen this section of land because of inside information from Richard Keyes about an upcoming need for water rights for a power plant project. Barton was a geologist and a civil engineer. In 1893 Barton completed plans for the township of Isabella which consisted of 98 parcels. He chose the name "Isabella" because of Queen Isabella of Spain. He wanted the name to be patriotic and different from other rough and rowdy names of nearby towns.
