Geocache Description:

Orpington War Memorial

At the given coordinates, you can see the Orpington War Memorial in the centre of the busy roundabout.

This is the war memorial for the area of the borough that was once the Orpington Urban District Council area. The memorial was originally unveiled on Sunday 28th August 1921. It was designed by Charles Heaton Comyn. The design is a triangular column of Portland stone about 6 metres high with the names of the fallen cut into each of the three sides. Two sides have a simple cross at the summit and the third side, a Horse Rampant, the symbol of Kent.

It originally recorded the names of the 111 local men who died in The First World War. Names have been added many times over the years and now includes names from: First World War (1914-1918), Second World War (1939-1945), Aden Emergency (1963-1967), Malayan Emergency (1948-1960), Berlin Airlift (1948-1949), Korean War (1950-1953), 20th Century Wars (1900-1999), Egypt and the Suez Crisis (1951-1956).

On 13th July 2018, a new plaque commemorating the loss of life of those from the Orpington community during active service was revealed at the coordinates you're standing at.
