In early 1902 the Greencastle Carnegie Library Commission was created and successfully obtained approximately $20,000 from the Carnegie Foundation to build a city library. The cornerstone was laid in August of 1902, and the building was ready for its dedication in June of 1903. The Greencastle Star-Press wrote that, following the dedication, a large audience visited the new facility. The overwhelming opinion of the public was that the library was, “a thing of beauty, worthy the city, and credible to the Library Building Commission.”
Bell Hanna was the first librarian, caring for an initial collection of 1,500 volumes. She remained the librarian until 1926, leaving with the belief that the library, “might be, what every library ought to be – an integral part of public education.”
