Tall Park Strangers

1300-1400

Sunday 21st July 2019

Hi guys! A quick and simple CITO this time. We’ve been invited by the Bitterne Litter Team to do a quick litter pick on Freemantle Common.

This is a 3.1 hectare area of common land near Merryoak, Southampton. It consists of a green space surrounded by trees, and is not to be confused with the suburb of Freemantle on the other side of the city.

The land was formerly part of the manor of Bitterne and had been held for centuries by the Bishops of Winchester. Under the 1814 Bitterne Enclosure Award, Thomas Freemantle was allotted a piece of land on the opposite side of the road to the existing common. Freemantle’s land was marked as Freemantle Common on the 1851 tithe map and on the OS map of 1865. This land was incorporated into the Chessel estate after Thomas Freemantle’s death in 1834.

Refuse collection (from the bins) is the responsibility of the council but unfortunately, the litter  from everywhere else falls to volunteers to pick up so our mission is to go down and help them out for an hour.

Please indicate your ‘will attend’ so we have an idea of numbers. At 1300hrs there will be a briefing by David, after which the exercise will begin.

This is a new hosting organisation for us so I hope we can manage a good turnout !

Parking
David advises that parking is available on Freemantle Common Road, which is a quiet road adjacent to the park. Close to the junction with Spring Road (and at the listed coordinates) there is a small children’s play park which is where we shall meet.

How
David from the Bitterne Litter Team will be on hand to provide guidance and equipment. Unfortunately, he cannot provide gloves, so if you need them please bring them. Please also consider wearing appropriate clothing and sensible footwear. All other equipment will be provided.  The event will proceed in any weather unless there are high winds or storms. There will be appropriate tasks for almost any ability level.

Health and Safety
All health and safety rules apply. Children will need supervision and pets kept under control.

Any more questions, please get in touch! Thanks for reading this, and hope to see you there!
