Geocache Description:

The original Naga Buddha cache at the Kempsville Rec Center had to be archived when a landscaping crew demolished its hiding place and there was no alternate site nearby. This is the eighteenth in a series of caches highlighting the art of Norfolk's Chrysler Museum. This sculpture may be seen in Gallery 107 at the museum.

Date: ca. 12th century
Artist: Unknown

Naga, in Hinduism and Buddhism is the Sanskrit word for a deity taking the form of a great snake, specifically the multi-headed king cobra. Many Buddha statues are seen where the Buddha is depicted in meditation pose sheltered by a Naga snake. The Naga Buddha statues are considered to have originated from India but later, with the spread of Buddhism, the carving of such unique statues started to appear from many Southeast Asian nations.

It is said that 4 weeks after the Buddha began meditating under the Bodhi tree, the heavens darkened for 7 days, and a heavy rainfall started. The mighty king of the serpents, Mucilanda then emerged from beneath the earth, and protected the Buddha with his hood. When the storm stopped, the serpent king assumed his human form, bowed before the Buddha & returned to his palace in joy.

The iconographic representation of this Buddhist folklore is known as the Naga Buddha statues. The Buddha sits in lotus position with a coiled cobra rising behind him, and spreading its hood with 7 heads over him. The Buddha's hands are on his lap, palms up; he wears cone shaped earrings, an elaborate necklace, arm bands, and a carved headdress with a cone top.
