The Church
St Mary the Virgin Church dates back to the 13th century and it has one of only three remaining Veil Screens in England. This was used for the hanging of a veil to screen off the altar during lent but the practice was forbidden in the Reformation.
The earliest existing part of the church is the largely 13th century chancel, although there was originally a Saxon church on the site. No trace remains, either of that or of the late-Norman church which succeeded it. The entire nave, originally 12-13th century, was rebuilt in 1872-3 when the south door was moved and a porch added. There is a 15th century font, a painting of the Royal Arms dating from the reign of Queen Anne and a Jacobean pulpit. The external walls of the church are mainly flint and contain pieces of stonework from the earlier building. Unfortunately, the church appears to be locked most of the time.
Parking
There is space for a few cars at the end of Church Lane, but failing that, there is always space on East Lane. East Lane is on the junction with Church Lane and High Street.
The Cache
The headline coordinates take you to a very distinctive pink granite memorial to Sam Leney. His date of birth was ABst May 18CD.
The second stage takes you to a bench in memory of Anne Raynor next to the porch. The inscription has the years 19EF - 19GH.
Now sit down and work out the final location using your values in the following formula.
N51 (B+C)H.D(G-B)(F-A)
W001 EG.BC(H+E)
Checksum for all the digits in the coordinates = 56
The cache is not placed as near to the church as I would have liked but is just off a footpath and the GZ does give you a view of the church tower.
