Geocache Description:

Zaradi poteka vojne, meje in opazovalnic niso nikoli v celoti dokončali.

Največ jih je bilo no poteh in stezah. Poleg teh dveh so bile vmes nastavljene še mine, podobne ročnim bombam, z nasekanim lito-železnim plaščem.

EN: You are at the site of the former German Military Observatory #4. The observatory was set up at the border between Italy and Germany, border was established and marked in 1941 by German and Italian officers. The border was airtightly closed and was built by a German military organization called TODT, in collaboration with the German semi-military organization Arbeitsdienst, which consisted of 16-18 years old boys. The border line ran from the border road from Šentjanž towards Hinjce, Vrhek and Vodale.

The demarcation boundary consisted of four rows of columns, two and half meter high, driven into the ground at a distance of 1,5m. The empty space between the columns was filled by barbed wire. On the German side of the border were built machine-gun bunkers, dugouts and high defense observation towers. You can see the foundations of one of these towers at the treasure site. Such observatories were placed at 0.5 km 1 km apart, at higher elevations and viewing points. Due to the course of the war, borders and observatories, they were never fully completed.

On the Italian side, the Italians erected a 10m wide minefield and wire barriers. This part of the minefield was replaced by light defensive mines and the high part of the barrier by heavy hiking mines. Most of them were trails and paths. In addition to these two, mine-like hand-bombed mines with a chopped cast iron jacket were set up.

This border stopped any crossing of humans and animals until a partisan offensive broke through in 1943.

People from the 10km wide border area were mostly evicted, so these villages were mostly empty from 1942 to 1943.
