Welcome to Papa’s Pickleville Airport - Before every flight, a pilot gathers all information necessary for departure. It is important to know the weather, plan the route and prepare for a safe landing by studying the airport of arrival. Weather is an important part of the preparation. The airplane loves to take off into the wind. When there is no wind, air speed and ground speed are the same. When taking off into lots of wind, the air speed around the wings is faster (maybe 75 KTS) compared to the ground speed (maybe 55 KTS) creating lift, allowing a shorter take off roll and helping to get the airplane into the air with less effort. For our flight today, we are departing Papa’s Pickleville Airport and flying directly to Paris. (Paris Idaho that is) An amazing destination. On the way we will see beautiful Bear Lake, boats, people swimming or ice fishing and maybe even the Bear Lake Monster. Later we will see the pumping station, the bird refuge with amazing feathered friends of flight like osprey, black-necked stilt, American avocet, marsh wren, Franklin gull or an eagle; next farmland, cows and finally the airport with 4 runways. Hum which one do we want, 10, 28, 16, 34? For departure, wind is coming directly from the North. We could take off from one of two runways. Hint, the runway is named for the direction of travel immediately after departure. Don’t expect a gigantic compass painted on the ground. Solve the questions in the hint and you are invited to enter the airport. Stay a while, enjoy the view from way up here. Take a prize (or trade one) for your hard work. You earned it!
