Geocache Description:

This virtual cache was placed to commemorate the Grand Re-opening of the historic Davenport Hotel, once recognized as the grandest hotel west of the Mississippi River.

Around the turn of the last century Spokane was growing by leaps and bounds. Fortunes were being made by miners in the nearby Silver Valley, and ambitious entrepreneurs could do well. Louis Davenport opened his business, selling waffles out of a tent. Soon he became the manager of a local hotel, and eventually this hotel was built, with Louis as the manager. The hotel became widely known as a place for opulence, using only the finest of everything. The hotel was also known for its fireplace because the fire burned continually for many, many years.

In 1985 the hotel was closed and several foreign developers dabbled in restoration projects, but eventually all of them decided the projects were too costly. Then came local developer Walt Worthy and his wife, Karen, who recognized the historic value of the hotel. They began a restoration unparalleled in the Spokane region. The hotel is now open for business, the fire is burning, and the place looks great!

To log this cache, post a photo of yourself with your GPS in front of the rotating doorway on the south side of the building, or alternately, email me with the answer to this question: In the main lobby area, what modern day convenience is directly opposite the fireplace? Don't post the answer here, even if encrypted.
