At the top of Poatina Road, just past the turnoff to Cramps Bay, a fella stands patiently on the roadside. This stacked rock formation is known to the locals as ‘the Mexican’.
He wears his sombrero hat and is sometimes colourfully dressed. You’d be hard pressed to miss him.
The cache itself is located roughly one kilometre past the Mexican in a turnoff parking area. This makes the location pretty kid safe and a decent spot to take a rest from the driving to stretch the legs.
Please do not stop on the roadside near the Mexican, the road is narrow, the verge is narrow and the occasional log truck roars through.!
