Introduction
Perhaps at first sight this doesn't look at a vulcano at all. Maybe even not at second sight but wait... There is a real crater up here and you can see it from close without climbing mountains. Although the crater is at the hight of 740 meters you can just park your car next to it. You will imediately know if you are at the right spot by the smell.
Welcome at the Duvalo site, an active geothermal surface which is the last evidence of historical vulcanic activity. in 1973, it's already been a while, the temperature was meassured; at a depth of 80 meters the temperature was 35 degrees, at a depth of 400 meters it was 95 degrees.
you can find the crater, it is about 50 cm wide and 30 cm deep. The sulfur gasses are escaping from this hole and the site was used for mining sulfur. If you wonder what sulfur smells like? yes, it is the stence of rotten eggs.
Questions
Then we move on to the questions, this is for an earth scientific lesson which is part of the geocache. You are allowed to log the cache after sending me the answers; if something is wrong I will contact you. Please make sure you send the answers, logs whitout answers are deleted. As this cache is placed for the eart scientific lesson, you are allowed to use old pics of your holliday here as long as you can send me the right answers. Have a look at the sign at the site; it will help you to find the right answers.
1) Is this more like a fumarole or a sulfatara? Explain your answer.
2) Moffeta is a type of vulcanic discharge. Explain why the Duvalo site is a moffeta.
3) Optional: post a picture of yourself, your GPSr or your mascot with your log.
Opening hours
As the site is open 24/7 and the acces is free there are no real opening hours. But make sure you visit the site during the day and don't go there at night! Don't go behind the fence and respect the site!
