Originally Mt Alford was called Reckumpilla. A general store was opened in 1888 and rebuilt into the traditional country store in 1913. The building has featured in a number of commercials, TV series and films. The memorial to servicemen (all of whom attended the school) which stands in the grounds of the local primary school is topped by the smallest 'digger' statue in the whole of Queensland. The park is the grounds of St Peter's Anglican Church which opened in 1919 and was closed in 1969 and subsequently removed in 1973.
