Lo Pan (魯班), or Lǔ Bān in Mandarin, was a legendary carpenter, engineer, and inventor who lived between 507 and 440 BC.
This temple is the only one in Hong Kong, and one of only two temples in the world, solely dedicated to Lo Pan. The other temple to Lo Pan is in another former British possession, George Town, in the Malaysian island state of Penang.
The commemoration stone in the temple says that when it was built in 1884, contributions were collected from 1,172 people from various towns across Guangdong in order to pay for its construction. The temple was crafted by members of the guild from the constituent groups; carpenters, stone masons and brick workers.
Lo Pan Temple is a two-hall structure built on a platform. The roof with glazed tiles are supported by its "Five Famous Mountains Paying Tribute to Heaven" gable walls, which are very distinctive amongst local Chinese traditional architecture. Apart from the distinguished gable walls, other decorative features like ceramic figurines, mural paintings, plastered reliefs and sculptures adorn all over the ridges, and the interior and exterior walls of the Lo Pan Temple..
The Lo Pan festival is celebrated on the 13th day of the sixth month of the lunar calendar, which falls on July 15, 2019.
