Geocache Description:

Agios Sostis Island (Cameo)

Emergence of islands

The mainland islands were formed by separation of the mainland from the nearby continent, when part of the Earth's crust fell below and was therefore flooded with the sea. The mainland islands are thus made up of the mainland by the earth’s crust.

Volcanic islands have been formed in places of volcanic activity, which can take place even underwater at the bottom of the oceans. So it originates at the bottom, but it is so high that its peak rises above the surface of the ocean.

Coral islands (Atols) are formed in warm seas. A colony of coral is formed around the island, and their calcareous skeletons are joined together in a solid coral reef. The gradual disappearance of the island creates a ring of coral islands, whose peaks rise above the surface.

Agios Sostis Island (Cameo)

The small island of Agios Sostis, which locals call "Cameo" (according to the disco on it), is situated in the southern part of the Greek island of Zakynthos, just opposite the port of Agios Sostis, which is part of the popular Bay of Laganas. The name was awarded to the island after the church of Agios Sostis, which stood here in the sixteenth century.

It can be reached by a narrow wooden bridge, which makes it accessibly by dry foot. At night, the island and the bridge are beautifully illuminated.

Once a part of the mainland, the island was created after a massive earthquake in the first half of the 17th century. This magnificent place is filled with special stone formations, small bays and tall pine trees. There is a nice small pebble beach.

From the top of the island there is a spectacular view of the surrounding area, while the other is down by a small beach overlooking the turtle Island of Marathonisi.

Photos of the Cameo Island adorne every promotional material about Zakynthos, including offers of wedding agencies specialising in Greek wedding ceremonies. This place is chosen by many couples for their big wedding day. There are white veils everywhere and beautiful wedding photographs are created on a small pier that plunges into the sea.

The island is privately owned but accessible to the public.

To recognise the log please send me answers to the following questions via my profile. If there are any ambiguities in your replies, you will be contacted immediately after submitting your replies.

Questions:

1) In which particular year did the devastating earthquake cause the detachment of the island from the mainland?

2) How many stone layers do you see on the rock at WP1?

3) What kind of rock is it and what color is it?

4) Based on what observations can we tell that the island has been detached from the mainland?

5) Optional task, which may, however, affect inaccurate answers. Take a picture of yourself or your GPS at the island.
