Geocache Description:


The city of Chester was founded as a fort, known as Deva Victrix in AD 79. It was named Deva either after the goddess of the Dee, or directly from the British name for the river that flowed past the fort. The 'victrix' part of the name was taken from the title of the Legio XX Valeria Victrix who were based at Deva.

Chester city walls were started by the Romans when they established the fortress. Originally a rampart of earth and turf surmounted by a wooden palisade but replaced from about 100 AD with sandstone. When Æthelflæd refounded Chester as a burgh in 907 the defences were improved. Following the Norman conquest, the walls were extended to the west and the south to form a complete circuit. These walls are about 3km/1.8 miles in length and still exist today.


This is one of two multicaches placed around these walls. This one starts at Morgan’s Mount and follows the walls clockwise passing the cathedral and world famous East Gate clock to New Gate. The other multicache in the pair starts at New Gate and continues clockwise down to the river and passes both Chester Castle and Britain’s oldest racecourse.

To find this cache you need to visit four information boards on the city walls. They are well worth reading as they detail the history of that part of the city. In the lower left corner of each is a dark blue 3-dimensional item. Use the corresponding digit in the list below to work out the location of the cache.
