This is our third cache in a series planned to highlight monuments and buildings in Windhoek, some well known and some off the beaten track.
This cache takes you to a memorial of Curt von Francois, in front of the municipal building of Windhoek.
The 2.4 m high-bronze statue of Curt von Francois, gazing down Independence Avenue, was unveiled on October 18, 1965 during the 75-year anniversary celebrations of Windhoek.
He was Reichskommissar and Landeshauptmann of German South West Africa and left a remarkable legacy to the former colony.
Curt von François is recognised as the European founder of Windhoek and Swakopmund. Von François was not only a soldier but primarily a talented cartographer and researcher who contributed significantly to the development of the former German colony.
