This was the busiest travel way in northern Hennepin County at one time. People used this road to haul goods to the city markets and up north. It was a huge part of the early settlement of Northern Hennepin County and parts of near bye Wright County. It crosses over a series of ridges, including a section that includes the highest point in Hennepin County. It was authorized by the Territorial Legislature in 1855 and identified as the "first legitimate outlet" for this section of Hennepin County. Through the years, it became a major transportation route for surrounding communities "because it was maintained.
