Geocache Description:

Graveyard Shift
1000-1130 (approx)
Saturday 3rd August 2019

Hi guys! You’re invited to join us on Saturday 3rd August for some ground clearing work at the Old Southampton Cemetery, in the centre of the city. The main tasks will be clearing vegetation from pathways of this historic place of rest, and some ivy from the graves. The site is maintained by volunteers from the Friends of Old Southampton Cemetery, who have been generous enough to host us for the morning.

We’ll meet at the published coordinates just before 10am - these are the old cemetery gates at the end of Cemetery Road. I’m informed that parking is free there for 4 hours. At 10am there will be a briefing by Bill, and then we’ll work through to approximately 1115 before stopping for refreshments.

Please bring your own gloves.

Please indicate your ‘will attend’ so we have an idea of numbers.

This is a new hosting organisation for us so I hope we can manage a good turnout !

History

Southampton Old Cemetery was established by an 1843 Act of Parliament. It now covers an area of 27 acres and is the final resting place of approximately 116,800 people. It is one of the oldest council-owned graveyards in the country and has grown in size since it was first founded, with Church of England and Jewish chapels later built on the site.

Bill and Val will happily provide more information, and if requested a brief tour, about the interesting history of this historic cemetery.

Parking
Bill advises that parking is available along Cemetery Road, and it is free for 4 hours. We will meet at the cemetery gates, at the end of the road at the published coordinates.

How
Bill and Val from the Friends of Old Southampton Cemetery will be on hand to provide guidance and equipment. Unfortunately, they cannot provide gloves, so if you need them please bring them. Please also consider wearing appropriate clothing and sensible footwear. All other equipment will be provided.  The event will proceed in any weather unless there are high winds or storms. There will be appropriate tasks for almost any ability level.

Health and Safety
All health and safety rules apply. Children will need supervision and pets kept under control.

More information is available here.

Any more questions, please get in touch!
