While many visitors make their way to the historic Key West Cemetery near the center of Old Town, it seems like very few realize that there's another important cemetery just a few blocks east. You could probably walk or ride a bike past this small, grassy field and not even realize that this contains some very unique history.
The field before you is the Peary Court U.S. Burial Grounds. In this spot, Army soldiers and their families were buried during the Civil War. Most of the people who were buried here died of yellow fever. Although many of those buried here were later moved to Pensacola for reinterment, this historic site still holds the remains of some of those soldiers and family members lost during the 19th century.
UPDATE: There is no need to enter the grounds or go on private property to retrieve this cache.
