Geocache Description:

This cache is place in accordance with the 2019 Kern River Valley Camp Out.

Oxyx store was constructed in 1861 by William Scodie as a supplies depot for local farmers and miners. Scodie, born in Prussia, developed culinary skills in Germany. He eventually settled and named what is now Onyx California. After Scodies death in 1898, the store was leased to Henry Wirth, Lee Rankin, and Phil Glezen--in that order--was finally purchased by Oscar Rudnick and A.J. Alexander. The Rudnick estate, which owned the store in 1970, leased the building to Jess Barr, who still carries on the tradition of country store keeping started by so many years ago by Scodie.
