Il Castello Visconteo di Pavia fu costruito per volontà di Galeazzo II Visconti tra il 1360 e il 1365 per farne sua dimora. Si tratta di una struttura elegante eretta non per scopi militari, ma per essere sede di una corte colta e raffinata.
Le sue meravigliose sale affrescate, come la “sala Azzurra”, hanno assistito al passaggio di molti personaggi illustri dell’epoca, tra cui Petrarca, Leonardo Da Vinci e Bramante; vi trovate quindi presso quello che fu uno dei maggiori centri di produzione artistica del periodo rinascimentale.
I Visconti vollero anche disegnare un grandioso parco di caccia, attualmente non più esistente, che dal Castello, tutto recintato da mura, si estendeva a settentrione fino alla Certosa: ciò che ne resta è chiamato Parco della Vernavola.
Questa Residenza vantava delle attrazioni, ormai purtroppo scomparse: la Biblioteca ordinata da Francesco Petrarca, un mirabolante orologio astronomico, la raccolta di un centinaio di sacre reliquie e una sala con pareti rivestite da specchietti dipinti in oro, che riflettevano i raggi di luce con effetti suggestivi.
A partire dal secondo dopoguerra, è divenuto sede dei Musei Civici, composti da varie sezioni consultabili sul sito ufficiale.
L’ingresso ai Musei Civici è a pagamento, ma il cortile interno con il loggiato è visitabile gratuitamente.

The Visconti Castle of Pavia was built by Galeazzo II Visconti between 1360 and 1365 to be his residence. It is an elegant structure built not for military purposes, but to be the seat of a cultured and refined court.
Its wonderful frescoed rooms, such as the "sala Azzurra", have witnessed the passage of many illustrious figures of the time, including Petrarch, Leonardo Da Vinci and Bramante: you are at what was once one of the major centers of artistic production of the Renaissance period. The Visconti family also wanted to design a magnificent hunting park, no longer existing, which from the castle, all enclosed by walls, extended northwards to the Certosa: what remains today is called the Vernavola Park.
This residence had some attractions, now unfortunately disappeared: the Library ordered by Francesco Petrarca, an amazing astronomical clock, the collection of a hundred sacred relics and a room with walls covered with mirrors painted in gold, which reflected the rays of light with suggestive effects.
After the Second World War, it became the home of the Civic Museums, composed of various sections that can be consulted on the official website.
Entrance to the Civic Museums is subject to a fee, but the inner courtyard with the loggia can be visited free of charge.
