Geocache Description:

Please be aware that the road up to the top of Mt Inkerman is steep and narrow in some places, and should only be attempted by those in sedans or 4WDs not towing caravans or camper trailers.

The view from the top of Mt Inkerman is amazing and gives you a near 360 degree view of the Burdekin district. The Rotary club has recently done some work to improve the facilities which includes 2 viewing platforms, a BBQ and plenty of seating. This is in stark contrast to what it looked like before. As the name of the cache suggests, if you visit between June and November in the afternoon, you are guaranteed to see some beautfiful canefires throughout the district.

The Burdekin district is the last area in Australia that still burns the majority of its' cane, due to the variety of Burdekin cane being thicker with more "cane trash". You may observe the black "Burdekin snow" that falls after the fire, which used to be the case all across the cane growing areas of the country. While you may come across scattered canefires across QLD, none of the other areas burn the majority of their cane and it is unlikely to see multiple canefires at once. You may also be lucky enough to spot some rock wallabies that live on Mt Inkerman. If you are driving down around dusk, these can be a road hazard.

To access the cache, you can drive and park in the limited spaces for the lookout. You just follow the road up to the top, and turn right at the T section. If you're feeling fit you can park in the dirt area after the turn off and make the walk up the formal path. You should leave about 2 hours to do the hike up and down. The cache container is a medium sized camoflaged box that is not directly at the lookout. The GZ can be accessed via an informal walking path from the lookout carpark, that is right next to the entrance to the formal walking path. You will need to watch out for prickly plants as there are some near the GZ.
