A boy in Brooklyn Park was always on his bike, going off to adventure. We'd bike down to Earle Brown's farm, a thousand-acre ranch that lay along Highway 100, white face cattle grazing on a treeless plain, with Mr. Brown's big house, barns, stables, and riding arena in the distance. Earle Brown had been sheriff in Hennepin County and apparently he had the same cowboy fantasies that we had; his farm looked for all the world like a piece of Texas. We'd bike up 77th to a deserted grass airstrip, Victory Memorial Field, left over from World War I, where rusting planes sat in a big silent hangar. We'd climb into the cockpits and I'd imagined soaring and roaring through the cloudbanks over the Rhine blasting Nazi Messerschmidts out of the sky.
