A 500 ft hike up a path from the ASU baseball parking lot will bring you to the Broyhill Wind Turbine. The Broyhill Wind Turbine was installed in 2009. The turbine is a Northern Power Systems Northwind 100 wind generator and a result of the innovative partnership between the REI and New River Light and Power (NRLP); The REI allocated $319,800 and NRLP provided the remaining $213,200. The turbine is currently one of North Carolina's largest and is estimated to produce up to 147,000 kWh annually, off-setting 200 metric tons of carbon dioxide.
The turbine sits at an elevation of 3546.6, the highest point on Appalachian’s campus.
