Geocache Description:

Seen from some distance away, the impressively massive structure of the "Stop Butt", used to catch bullets from the firing range, is the most obvious sign to the history of this part of the moor.

During World War 2, soldiers would use this facility to train with rifles. There seems to be little record of how many soldiers were trained here, or even exactly when, but so much of the site is left that is it not difficult to see how it worked and imagine hundreds of men training with unfamiliar weapons to fight at the front.

It is worth exploring this area for lots of military history items. For more information there is a short article here: Wikipedia article

This is also Dartmoor and the weather can change rapidly.  Be prepared.

The entire area is on Common Land and you may encounter sheep, cattle and ponies.

Suggested route: Park at the waypoint and then walk through the little gate. Explore the Shelter building and the latrines behind it, before walking to GZ.

The three large banks heading NNW from GZ are firing positions at 300, 200 and 100 yards from the targets. They have depressions on top where riflemen would fire from.

It's well worth walking up to the Stop Butt itself and imagining how things worked.

Note: This cache was originally hidden as an offset: GC882E2, but had some problem. It has been re-issued as a Premium-only traditional cache. Update: January, 2024 - I have removed the Premium flag after five years to allow for more finders.
