Questa cache è dedicata a Ernest Hemingway, celeberrimo scrittore statunitense che nel corso della Prima guerra mondiale, nel 1918, arruolatosi come autista di ambulanze, venne mandato sul fronte italiano come assistente di trincea, nei pressi di Fossalta di Piave e Zenson di Piave.
This cache is dedicated to Ernest Hemingway, the famous American writer who, during the First World War, in 1918, enlisted as an ambulance driver, was sent to the Italian front as a trench assistant, near Fossalta di Piave and Zenson di Piave.
I luoghi di Hemingway: la casa gialla
“…quelle erano le notti in cui il fiume scorreva molto più largo e tranquillo del solito e alla periferia di Fossalta c’era una casa bassa dipinta di giallo tutta circondata dai salici e una stalla bassa e c’era un canale, e lui c’era stato mille volte senza vederla, ma ogni notte era lì, nitida come la collina, solo che gli faceva paura. Quella casa era tutto per lui, e ogni notte la ritrovava.”

Quando nel 1918 Ernest Hemingway si arruolò come volontario nei servizi di autoambulanze e venne inviato sul fronte italiano, la notte tra l’8 e il 9 luglio venne colpito nei pressi di Fossalta di Piave dalle schegge dell’esplosione di una bombarda austriaca, che non lo ferirono gravemente perché fu salvato da un soldato italiano che gli aveva fatto involontariamente da scudo. Cercò di mettere in salvo i feriti ma fu colpito poi alla gamba destra da proiettili di mitragliatrice.
Questa casa gialla è la prima che vide appena ferito, uscendo dalla trincea di Busa Burato, e che ritornerà spesso nei suoi incubi come rappresentazione dell’angoscia di quei momenti, rimanendo per sempre impressa nella mente dello scrittore.
Oggi la Casa Gialla c’è ancora, ben viva e presente testimonianza di tutti gli eventi della Grande Guerra accaduti in zona.

When in 1918 Ernest Hemingway signed up as a volunteer in ambulance services and was sent to the Italian front, on the night between 8 and 9 July he was hit near Fossalta di Piave by shrapnel from an Austrian bomb explosion, which did not he was seriously wounded because he was saved by an Italian soldier who had inadvertently made him a shield. He tried to rescue the injured but was shot in the right leg by machine-gun bullets.
This yellow house is the first one he saw just wounded, coming out of the trench of Busa Burato, and who will often return to his nightmares as a representation of the anguish of those moments, remaining forever etched in the mind of the writer.
Today, the Yellow House still bears witness to all the events of the Great War in the area.
