This Location
The Sequatchie Valley’s abundant water supplied moonshiners with a necessary ingredient for their product, leading to a great deal of violence during the early- and mid-1900s. Nine men went to battle over their competing home brews in the Whiskey War of 1920. Six were severely injured, and another shooting a few days later resulted in death.
Bledsoe County and the Sequatchie Valley
The first settlers entered the Sequatchie Valley in the late 1700s through Bledsoe County, named for Anthony Bledsoe, a Revolutionary War patriot who migrated to Tennessee from Virginia and was later killed in an Indian attack. With stories of family feuds, moonshine wars, and Civil War conflict, the area’s rich history resulted in the nickname “Bloody Bledsoe” a century ago.
