May 4, 2003,

Dear Diary,

It has been just over 10 years since budget cuts closed our community library in 1992 and today is the big day! We hand over operations back to Sacramento County and officially open the new library in Courtland! I am so excited I can hardly contain myself. I am so proud of our community!

We have maintained library service strictly on a volunteer basis since 1993. The first few weeks were so depressing. Then a group of us got together and decided we would keep the library open ourselves! The elementary school offered us space and even named it the Courtland Volunteer Library! Our population continued to grow and the library was one of the most popular places in town! It took several years, but eventually we began to outgrow our space. The school knew it too and in response donated a piece of property on which to build a new library!

I studied and learned about Federal grants, resulting in funding of $200,000. We ordered two buildings, totaling 1400 square feet, now ready and waiting for the ribbon cutting.

I can hardly believe the time has come for our core group of volunteers to “retire” and I am looking forward to it with mixed emotions. We have seen neighborhood children grow up right in front of us. Adults have visited weekly and the technology we have seen advance takes my breath away!

10 years, but our work was far from being complete.  Back in 1992 we established a new group, ”Friends of the Library” in 1992. This will continue to raise funds and help our library in any way possible, to ensure we never have another devastating closure.

This is a quick, easy multi with virtual stops ending in a place that will be familiar to most people. Collect the required clues to enable you to find the prize located @ ABC.CBA. Once you have the first two clues you will enter the building, complete one more mission and by putting all the numbers together... claim your smiley. Remember to speak quietly once inside.

From the parking coordinates, make your way to the northeast corner of the building. There are two plaques on the outside of the building. Please read the smaller “Dedication” plaque on the right.

Mission: B = The last digit of the year.

From this location please read the larger “Board of Trustees” plaque on the left.

Mission: C = The last digit of the year.

Okay, let's go inside and head on over to the northwest corner. Hiding behind a special group of books you’ll find your next challenge. Be sure to add a “#” after dialing the 5 digit number.

Mission: Listen carefully for A.

The final location is: ABC.CBA Carefully substitute the mission answers for the correct letters.
