Geocache Description:

Go across the Antelope Island Causeway and then proceed toward the road leading south to the ranch. This cache is located at the second pull-out on the island road which runs to the ranch at the south end of the island. A sign about Fire Ecology lies a few feet to the north of the cache which is in a bush. Look for a small bottle containing a small pill bottle and a log only. This is Pinto72 cache number 142 currently available on the Causeway or on Antelope Island itself.

Antelope Island is covered primarily by grasslands. The main reason for this is the high frequency of lightning-caused wildfires. After a fire, grasses return quickly and cover burned areas. Woody plants such as shrubs and trees, often take many years to become reestablished. Because of recurring range fires, the low elevation grasslands of Antelope Island are dominated by the exotic, introduced cheatgrass. Cheatgrass, sometimes called Junegrass, becomes tinder dry in early June and is ignited by lightning strikes. Antelope Island has very little sagebrush, because sagebrush is slow to recover from fire damage. Looking east from the cache site is one of the largest stands of sagebrush on the island. Sagebrush is a favorite food of pronghorn antelope and mule deer. For decades the island lacked sufficient sagebrush to support pronghorn antelope. In 1993 they were re-introduced and are now thriving.
