Geocache Description:

28 September 2019, 10:00 - 11:30

A Pear-fect Opportunity
1000-1130 (approx)
Saturday 28th September 2019

Hi guys! You’re invited to join us on Saturday 28th September for some ground clearing work at Peartree Green, Southampton. The main tasks will be clearing vegetation from pathways into this attractive park. The site is maintained by volunteers from the Friends of Peartree Common, who have been generous enough to host us for the morning.

We’ll meet at the published coordinates just before 10am, by the play park at the published coordinates. I have been advised that parking immediately adjacent may be tricky - I've put the immediately adjacent roads on the page listing but otherwise, it will be a case of finding a road nearby to use (from 10 years of experience in the area there are several, so it shouldn't be a problem.) At 1000am there will be a briefing by PHIL and JILL, and then we’ll work through to approximately 1130. Jill says, "We provide tools, but if people want to bring their own loppers, secateurs or hand saws (for saplings), they're welcome to. We don't have insurance for power tools. We provide gloves too."

Please indicate your ‘will attend’ so we have an idea of numbers.

This is a new hosting organisation for us so I hope we can manage a good turnout !

History

Peartree Green is an open space on high ground on the east bank of the River Itchen in Southampton. A sixteenth century building, Peartree House, the former residence of General Henry Shrapnel, still stands. The house and the green take their name from a pear tree that grew near the parish church. The nearby church also features the grave of tragic Victorian murder victim, Richard Parker. Some of the original open space has been built on, but a large proportion remains as a recreational area.

Parking

I have been advised that parking may be tricky - I've put the immediately adjacent roads on the page listing but otherwise, it will be a case of finding a road nearby to use (from 10 years of experience in the area there are several, so it shouldn't be a problem.) For your information, Sea Road is open at both ends although there is a barrier in the middle.

How
Phil and Jill from the Friends of Peartree Green will be on hand to provide guidance and equipment. They will provide all equipment, including gloves, though if you prefer to bring your own secateurs and hand saws, please feel free. Please also consider wearing appropriate clothing and sensible footwear. The event will proceed in any weather unless there are high winds or storms. There will be appropriate tasks for almost any ability level.

Health and Safety
All health and safety rules apply. Children will need supervision and pets kept under control.
